Job Summary

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) for the Adult Electrophysiology (EP) unit at Duke University Hospital. The APP will work in collaboration with attending physicians and the EP care team to provide direct care to cardiology patients, with a primary focus on EP patients in the Cardiovascular Short Stay pre-procedural and post-procedural areas. The APP performs physical examinations, obtains procedural consent, collects and documents clinical data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and leadership.

Primary hours are four 10-hour shifts per week for a 40-hour work week. Hours and days may vary based on service needs and may be adjusted by Heart Center Leadership in consultation with clinical service line leadership.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Evaluate new, consult, and established cardiovascular patients ages 16 years and older during the pre-procedural, post-procedural, and/or perioperative phases of care; diagnose, treat, and manage common conditions in the cardiovascular patient population.
• Obtain and document patient histories and physical examinations; prepare patient workups, progress notes, and summaries; document pertinent positive and negative findings; obtain relevant psychosocial history; and develop therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
• Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• Obtain informed consent for appropriate procedures and conscious sedation for assigned patients, and discharge procedural patients as directed by the attending physician, including discharge summaries, patient education, and discharge orders.
• Assess patients for changes in clinical status and initiate appropriate interventions, including emergency stabilization and preparation for transfer to the Emergency Department, Operating Room, or inpatient setting when needed.
• Collaborate closely with the EP Lab Charge Nurse, Outpatient Discharge (EOD) Service, inpatient rounding teams, lab fellows, physicians, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to allocate workload and meet daily clinical and operational needs.
• Perform or assist with approved procedures after competency validation, which may include venous and arterial blood sampling, peripheral IV insertion, venous/PICC line removal, urinary catheterization, wound management, urgent/emergent defibrillation or cardioversion, tilt testing, implantable loop recorder insertion, sheath removal, temporary permanent pacemaker dressing changes, and pacemaker/ICD interrogation.
• Administer and manage ordered infusion therapy and medications within scope of practice, including IV fluids, anticoagulants, analgesics, antibiotics, antiarrhythmics, antihypertensives, inotropes, electrolytes, blood products, and nutrition therapies.
• Participate in education, training, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and research activities; support the education of patients, families, staff, learners, and trainees.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education           

Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited graduate-level Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program.

Physician Assistants: Work requires graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies.

Certification 

National certification as an Acute Care NP or certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), as applicable.

BLS and ACLS certification required.

License                

Nurse Practitioners: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina and approval to practice as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

Physician Assistants: Current licensure as a Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina.

Experience          

At least one year of experience as an Acute Care NP or PA in cardiology/electrophysiology is strongly preferred; new graduates will be considered.
